I wrote two OSL shaders in Maya that is procedurally linked with (bubble) RenderMan material.  Ultimately, giving a simple object the appearance of a swirly bubble. 

 

There was definitely a vital need to carefully observe and document a natural phenomenon before creating a digital version of it.
